In line with global health safety standards and national immunization guidelines, Jigawa State has successfully completed the safe disposal of 160,837 polio vaccine vials following the June 2025 round of the National Immunization Plus Days (NIPDs).
The disposal exercise included 49,649 vials of novel Oral Polio Vaccine (nOPV0) and 110,705 vials of bivalent Oral Polio Vaccine (bOPV), alongside 483 unopened vials that were properly recorded and discarded.
The destruction of vaccine vials is a critical post-campaign requirement to ensure public safety, prevent the misuse or circulation of counterfeit vaccines, and protect the environment from biological waste. Polio vaccine vials—especially those containing live, attenuated virus—must be inactivated and destroyed immediately after campaigns to comply with WHO protocols and Nigeria’s National Guidelines for Immunization Waste Management.
The disposal process is part of standard post-campaign procedures, sequel to the just concluded June 2025 round of the National Immunization Plus Days (NIPDs). The used vials retrieved from all 27 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state after the mandated 14-day window post-campaign, as required by the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA were collected, boiled, and buried at a secured and approved disposal site to ensure full deactivation and environmental safety.
The exercise was supervised by the Immunization Waste Management Officer, Malam Danladi Jaafar, under the technical guidance of the Acting State Immunization Officer (SIO), Alhaji Shehu Ibrahim Kazaure, and the State Cold Chain Officer (SCCO), Alhaji Yusuf Inuwa. It was witnessed by representatives from UNICEF Vaccine Security and Logistics (VSL 1 and VSL 2), the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC)—all of whom ensured compliance, accountability, and transparency.
