The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed 39 cases of monkeypox (mpox) across 33 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with no deaths reported.

The NCDC’s Director General, Dr. Jide Idris, revealed these details during a press briefing following the World Health Organization’s (WHO) declaration of mpox as a public health emergency of international concern.

Dr. Idris highlighted that the NCDC is enhancing surveillance nationwide to swiftly detect and address new cases.

Health services at all five international airports, ten seaports, and 51 land borders are on high alert.

The states with the highest number of cases include Bayelsa and Cross River with five cases each, Ogun and Lagos with four cases each, and Ondo and Ebonyi with three cases each.

To combat the outbreak, the NCDC is preparing a vaccination campaign targeting high-risk groups, with plans to receive 10,000 doses of the Jynneos vaccine, effective against mpox. The vaccination initiative will start soon after the vaccines arrive.
