The Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) has teamed up with global satellite leader Eutelsat to provide Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite services across Nigeria.
The Announcement was made by NIGCOMSAT’s Corporate Affairs office, the partnership will leverage OneWeb’s advanced LEO satellite network to deliver high-speed, low-latency connectivity to various sectors, including government services, businesses, and rural communities.
The initiative aims to improve remote communications, mobile connectivity, and offshore operations throughout Nigeria. NIGCOMSAT’s Managing Director, Mrs. Jane Egerton-Idehen, highlighted the significance of the partnership in addressing Nigeria’s digital divide.
“This partnership marks a major milestone for NIGCOMSAT, enabling us to bridge Nigeria’s digital divide with OneWeb’s advanced LEO satellite technology.
“Together, we will provide scalable and reliable connectivity solutions that will drive growth across government services, businesses, and communities nationwide,” she stated.
This collaboration also strengthens the growing ties between Nigeria and France in the satellite and space technology sectors.
Eutelsat and NIGCOMSAT aim to foster innovation, accelerate digital transformation, and expand connectivity opportunities within Nigeria and beyond.
NIGCOMSAT, Nigeria’s leading satellite communications provider, already plays a vital role in supporting sectors such as communication, education, health, and security through its NigComSat-1R satellite.
Eutelsat, formed through the merger with OneWeb in 2023, operates a fleet of 35 geostationary satellites and over 600 LEO satellites, delivering services like mobile connectivity, video broadcasting, and government operations globally.
The partnership is expected to significantly boost Nigeria’s digital infrastructure, ensuring reliable and fast internet access in underserved and remote areas, contributing to the country’s broader digital transformation goals.
