South African Institute, Expo Launch Initiative To Revolutionize STEM Education

The Central University of Technology (CUT), Eskom Expo for Young Scientists, and the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE) have launched a pioneering initiative to revolutionize STEM education across the Free State.

This collaboration aims to deliver robotics workshops and mentorship programs to primary and secondary schools, nurturing a new generation of innovators, scientists, and engineers.

For 2024, Tlotlanang Combined School in Thaba Nchu and Setjhaba-se-Maketse High School in Botshabelo were selected to participate in this initiative.

Students from these schools were tasked with designing a prototype, which was presented at the Eskom Expo Bloemfontein Regional Science Fair on August 3, 2024, at CUT.

To ensure their success, learners received ongoing support and mentorship from students in CUT’s Department of Electrical Engineering.

On June 24, the learners visited the Fablab at CUT SciencePark to enhance their understanding of product development with advanced technologies like 3D printing and laser cutting.

Fablab officers Gustav Barnard and Dintwe Teboho provided a detailed overview of these technologies, including their applications and materials.

This initiative aims to transform STEM robotics education in the Free State by exposing students to cutting-edge technology and providing hands-on experience and expert guidance.

It is designed to equip students with essential technical skills, foster creativity, and develop problem-solving abilities.

Through prototypes and experience from the science fair, these learners are gaining invaluable experience that will serve as a foundation for future careers in engineering and technology.

This collaborative effort is not just an educational program; but a transformative journey shaping the future of STEM education in the Free State.
