The maiden edition of the International Conference on Biotechnology (ICOB24) has ended on Friday in Abuja with a call to African scientists, researchers, policy makers and others to do more within their respective spheres of influence to make biotechnology a key aspect of the continent’s development agenda.
This was the resonating voice across all the plenary and panel discussions anchored by over 50 speakers, most of whom are renowned scientists, researchers, policy makers and leaders of scientific groups and heads of renowned research institutions across Africa.
The participants shared knowledge and experiences, which the organisers have said would prove valuable in the next phase of engagements to make biotechnology work for the speedy development of Africa.
Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha Director General of National Biotechnology Research And Development Agency (NBRDA), the host institution and major organizer of the conference, while addressing the participants at the closing ceremony held at the Nigerian Air Force Conference Centre, Abuja said, the outcomes of all the deliberations should spur a new beginning in Africa’s strive to meet up with global development.
In his closing remarks, Prof Mustapha said, “As we bring the International Conference on Biotechnology 2024 (ICoB24) to a close, it is with great honour and gratitude that I reflect on the past five days of insightful discussions, collaborations, and innovations that have transpired here.”
Continuing, he said, “The seeds of transformative change have been planted here, and it is our collective duty to nurture them and allow innovation to flourish, and progress to thrive. Let us remain resolute in our commitment to harnessing biotechnology as a driver for positive change and ensure that the knowledge shared and the networks built here continue to yield benefits for years to come.”
The NBRDA DG expressed gratitude to the partners and sponsors of the conference, including namely Agro-climatic Resilience in Semi Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL); World Bank Assisted Project, Bauchi State Government, African Seed Trade Association (AFSTA), African Agricultural Foundation (AATF), PBS, OFAB Africa, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Sheda Science and Technology Complex (SHETSCO) and Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) whose contributions, he said were instrumental in making the conference a reality.
“Your belief in the transformative potential of biotechnology and your commitment to fostering collaboration have been invaluable,” while also applauding the Local Organsing Committee (LOC) led by Dr. Rose Gidado for their exceptional dedication which, according to him significantly contributed to the success of ICoB24.
The conference LOC Chair, Dr Rose Gidado, in her remarks also urged the participants to maintain the network they have established at ICOB24 for the good of science and Africa.
“As we depart, let us carry with us the knowledge, inspiration, and networks forged here, and continue to work together towards a future where biotechnology improves lives and sustains our planet,” Dr Gidado said.
