Vice President of the Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS), Professor Friday Okonofua, has been appointed Co-Chair of the Global Coalition of Academies of Medicine in Climate and Health.
The Coalition of Academies of Medicine in Climate and Health was formed in 2025, to unite the world’s leading medical academies behind the Belém Declaration, ensuring that health expertise became a driving force for transformative action at COP30 and beyond.
His appointment marked a personal milestone and a moment of pride for Nigeria and Africa, signaling the increasing recognition of African scientists in shaping global conversations, and solutions, on climate and health.
Now, as Co-Chair, Okonofua stands at the intersection of science, policy, and global collaboration. His role involves guiding the coalition’s direction, amplifying the voice of medical science in climate discussions, and ensuring that the health impacts of climate change are no longer overlooked.
