Africa50, the continent’s leading infrastructure investment platform, and NTPC Limited, India’s largest integrated power utility, have signed a landmark Cooperation Agreement to advance power engineering, clean energy integration, and cross-border electricity transmission across Africa.

The strategic partnership bridges NTPC’s extensive technical capabilities in large-scale power generation and grid modernization with Africa50’s project de-risking and financing capabilities. Together, the two organizations aim to deploy advanced power technology, expand regional electricity trading networks, and accelerate Africa’s clean energy transition.

Under the agreement, NTPC Limited, which manages over 91.5 GW of diversified energy capacity, including coal, gas, hydro, solar, and wind, will provide technical feasibility assessments, engineering design, construction management, and operational expertise. A central focus of the partnership involves leveraging modern power technologies to address Africa’s specific energy challenges, particularly through integrating Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and Pumped Storage Projects (PSP) to manage power intermittency and stabilize variable solar and wind inputs. The collaboration will also focus on designing high-capacity transmission corridors to facilitate real-time cross-border electricity trading and applying advanced engineering standards across thermal, hydro, and renewable installations to improve plant efficiency.

Africa50, backed by 34 African sovereign shareholders and development finance institutions, will leverage its continental pipeline to identify priority projects, navigate regulatory frameworks, and structure investable asset classes.

This technical collaboration delivers significant benefits directly to African nations. By applying utility-scale power engineering, the partnership addresses chronic load shedding and grid instability, providing the reliable baseline power needed to drive industrial growth, manufacturing, and tech sectors. Furthermore, NTPC’s experience in scaling renewables, targeting 60 GW of green capacity by 2032, offers African nations proven engineering frameworks to integrate intermittent solar and wind resources without compromising overall grid security. Enhanced cross-border trade capabilities will also allow resource-constrained countries to import surplus energy efficiently, lowering overall generation costs through shared regional power pools, while NTPC’s specialized training programs will help build local technical capacity among African engineers and system operators in modern grid management and digital power dispatch.

Highlighting the significance of the partnership, Mr. Alain Ebobisse, Group Chief Executive Officer of Africa50, noted that reliable and competitively priced power is central to Africa’s industrial transformation, emphasizing that combining Africa50’s ability to de-risk investable projects with NTPC’s technical expertise will help translate public ambition into private investment. Mr. Gurdeep Singh, Chairman and Managing Director of NTPC Limited, added that combining NTPC’s technical and operational experience with Africa50’s continental relationships creates a strong foundation for supporting reliable power supply and regional electricity trade across mutually agreed countries.

By uniting India’s largest power generator with Africa’s premier infrastructure investor, the agreement strengthens South-South technology transfer, supporting the resilient, high-capacity energy infrastructure required to power long-term economic growth across the African continent.
