The Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) has recorded a groundbreaking medical feat with the successful fitting of its first body-powered trans-humeral prosthesis on Mrs. Blessing Agidi, a survivor of a Fulani Herdsmen attack.
The procedure, which was sponsored by Prof (Mrs). Felicia Iorzua Ayatse, wife of the paramount traditional ruler of the Tiv ethnic group in Benue State, North Central Nigeria was conducted on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, marking a major leap forward in the hospital’s capacity for advanced orthopedic and rehabilitative care.
Speaking after the procedure, the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Terungwa Stephen Hwande, revealed that BSUTH is partnering with the Ishk Tolaram Foundation to expand prosthetic services. Over 300 individuals have already been enrolled for limb replacement, while the hospital is recruiting specialized professionals to establish a full-fledged prosthetics department.

The CMD commended the Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, for support the hospital’s pursuit of global healthcare standards. According to him, the governor’s vision has elevated BSUTH’s competitiveness among teaching hospitals in Nigeria and positioned it to become a hub for medical tourism and advanced clinical services.
Dr. Hwande also lauded Prof. Felicia Iorzua Ayatse, for her generous sponsorship of the prosthetic intervention, describing it as an act of deep compassion and moral duty. “Beyond royal privilege lies the greater responsibility of serving humanity,” he noted, adding that her benevolence will remain a proud chapter in the hospital’s history.
Expressing her joy, Mrs. Agidi, from Logo Local Government Area of the state, thanked her benefactor, the CMD, and the medical team for restoring her hope and independence. She appealed for similar support to reach other underprivileged Nigerians in need of transformative medical interventions.
