African Space Agencies Deploy New Earth Observation Data Portal for Regional Climate Monitoring

Nigeria’s National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), in collaboration with the African Space Agency and regional geospatial partners, has launched an integrated Earth Observation Data Portal to strengthen environmental monitoring and disaster risk management across West Africa.
Confronted with accelerating deforestation, severe coastal erosion, and expanding urban heat islands, the space agency is warning that uncoordinated environmental planning risks deepening climate vulnerabilities across the sub-region.
Speaking in Abuja at the unveiling of the portal following the 10th AfriGEO Symposium, NASRDA Director-General Professor Matthew Olumide Adepoju noted that open access to localized satellite data remains essential for evidence-based governance and sustainable land management.
Over 300 million citizens across West Africa depend on climate-sensitive agriculture and coastal infrastructure, yet access to high-resolution satellite mapping remains fragmented and prohibitively expensive for local planning institutions.
Millions of residents face severe risks from sudden flooding, land degradation, and coastal encroachment that timely Earth observation analytics could help anticipate and mitigate before disasters strike.
Yet over 75 percent of sub-Saharan local government departments lack direct access to processed, real-time satellite imagery tailored for rapid emergency response.
Among municipal planning authorities in Nigeria and neighboring states, outdated paper maps and delayed aerial surveys frequently hamper effective disaster preparation.
With climate anomalies intensifying, space scientists emphasize the adoption of centralized geospatial platforms as a direct way to bridge this gap.
Professor Adepoju stated that by consolidating multi-band satellite imagery, synthetic aperture radar, and historical land-use trends into a single open-access portal, regional scientists and emergency planners can monitor environmental shifts with high precision.
He, however, stressed that satellite data must translate directly into actionable local policies rather than remaining static in technical databases.
“How do we move from simply accessing satellite technology to using spatial data effectively in daily governance?” Professor Adepoju asked, emphasizing that federal, state, and regional agencies must invest in local technical capacity and broadband infrastructure so that space-derived insights directly protect vulnerable communities.
The agency is also calling on West African ministries of environment, urban development boards, and disaster management bodies to integrate satellite monitoring APIs into their operational frameworks to build long-term climate resilience.
