Nigerian Science Journalist, Odeh, shines in Malawi, Wins Africa Biotech Reporting Award

Nigerian science journalist and Editor of Afrtica Science Technology and Innovation (AfricaSTI) News, Onche Odeh, was on the stage in far away Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi as one Africa’s bests in science journalism as the Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology (OFAB) announced winners of the 10th edition of its media awards to celebrate excellence in science journalism in Africa.

Voted as the Best in the Print and Online category, Odeh was among three winners across three categories who were presented at an elaborate ceremony held on Friday night at the Bingu Wa Mtharika International Conference Centre, Lilongwe, Malawi.

Also recognized on the night is Nigeria’s Chinasa Ossai of Radio Nigeria who finished as second runner up in the Radio category and Blossom Aichida of African Independent Television (AIT) who also won in the TV category.

The awards are the outcomes of an annual competition hosted by OFAB across Africa to recognize excellence in science journalism, especially in Biotechnology reporting.

Odeh entered as a finalist at the continental stage with the double of being the winner of the Print and Online category Overall best from Nigerian.

Speaking on the relevance of the award, OFAB Africa Project Manager, Vitumbiko Chinoko, said the awards have served as an avenue for empowering journalists across Africa to effectively report biotechnology and related subjects.

OFAB media award celebrates journalists yearly for outstanding and accurate reporting of biotechnology.

This year’s competition featured entries from Rwanda, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Malawi, Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Mozambique, and Tanzania.

The 10th OFAB Africa award Ceremony, sponsored by the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) was hosted by the National Commission for Science and Technology (NCST) Malawi.
